Scotland’s Titanic: The Forgotten Sinking of the Iolaire

On New Year’s Day 1919, as the world celebrated the end of the First World War, tragedy struck off the coast of the Isle of Lewis. The HMY Iolaire, carrying over 280 returning Scottish servicemen, sank just yards from safety. Only 79 survived.

Many on board were young men—husbands, brothers, sons—finally heading home after years at war. In a cruel twist, they perished within sight of land, their families waiting on shore. It remains one of the worst maritime disasters in UK waters during peacetime.

The grief devastated the tight-knit island communities of the Outer Hebrides. Generations later, the loss still echoes in the local memory, often overshadowed by bigger global events of the time.

🌊 Why is this heartbreak still so little known?
