1870 Blantyre Mills Painting

The late Blantyre historian Neil Gordon, was certainly a very accomplished painter. Amongst his many passions of all things Blantyre, he took great delight in painting scenes of this old town. Like this painting he did in 1979, of Blantyre Mills pictured in 1870.

Some of Neil’s paintings ended up in local museums, others kept with family and friends. Neil lived only a few doors up from me at Stonefield Crescent and as a teenager, it was this man and his enthusiasm for recording old Blantyre, that fuelled my initial local history interest in the 1980’s. Neil sadly passed away on 5th December 2004, aged 67.
