This fantastic photo is from reader Ari Bowman.
Ari’s grandfather was Matthew Boyle, the well known publican who owned Matt’s Bar in Main Street, High Blantyre.
Ari’s mother was Angela Boyle (married name Angela Mcphail-Samson). Ari asked, “I was just wondering if you have any information on Matt as he passed long before I was even born. My mum passed away in 2023 and she always had very fond memories of him. I’ve attached a picture of my mum, sister and her mum and dad.”
I only have a few brief notes about Matt, so I’ll need to add this to my “to do” list. Here’s what I have….
“Matt lived at 306 Main Street, in a detached stone house with sizeable ground after moving there in the 1950’s from Morris Crescent with his wife Elizabeth Fenton. It was Elizabeth who named the house as Parkhurst although it is thought to have had a former name. Matt, born in 1899 a popular publican lived in the house for many years, but when he became elderly, he had to move for his own safety and security. He was attacked and robbed in his own driveway in September 1967 after cashing up. He has a grandson living today who carries the same name.”
