A little bit of Scottish history in other places. Some extra content. In the late 1690s, Scotland launched an ambitious plan to become a global trading power. The goal? Establish a colony called “Caledonia” on the Isthmus of Panama. Backed by wealthy investors and the hopes of a nation, the Darien Scheme set sail.
But disaster struck quickly. The tropical climate, disease, poor supplies, and hostility from the Spanish and English all took their toll. Of the 2,500 settlers, most died or fled. The colony collapsed within a year.
The financial loss was so severe it bankrupted many Scottish nobles and helped pave the way for the 1707 Act of Union with England—Scotland’s independence sacrificed under economic strain.
📉 Was this bold ambition… or national ruin?
