Discovering Blantyre’s 1893 Drapery: David Thomson’s Store

Another Blantyre business I’ve not heard of before. But no surprise, as this was from 132 years ago.

David Thomson, was a draper, clothier and milliner based in Stonefield, Blantyre. During March 1893, he took out an advert in the Hamilton Herald and Lanarkshire Weekly newspaper which had the following advert:

“David Thomson begs to thank his customers for their support in the past and would respectfully solicit a share of their future orders. On Saturday 1st April , DT will show a splendid assortment of all the leading novelties in dresses, millinery, infant’s millinery , flowers, feathers, ornaments, frillings, ribbons etc. DT has always on hand a well selected stock of general drapery goods at prices that will suit all.

Dress Department – Special attention is given to this department. Parties favouring him with a call with find it replete with all the newest cloths and leading shades for the coming season. DT would draw special attention to several lots of dress goods which he will clear out at 5s 6d and 5s 11d for full dress length. Dressmaking is done on the premises at moderate prices. Mourning orders specially attended to.

Millinery Department – For ladies hats, bonnets, infants christening hats and hoods, infants millinery see the windows on Saturday.

Clothing Department – A splendid selection of black and blue cords, tweeds and serges, in all the newest designs for the new season now in stock. Gentlemen favouring him with their orders may depend on them being made up first class style as the tailoring department is under the management of a first class cutter of large experience. Hats, Caps, shirts, drawers, undershirts, scarves, braces, etc of great variety.

BT was also appointed sole agent in Blantyre for Cooper’s & Co Famous tea.

I’m still unsure where this shop once was, but likely to be Glasgow Road. Wouldn’t it be incredible to have wandered through these departments for a look!
