Not a Religious Man, 1893

I like this little story from 1893. Hearsay but recorded in newspaper columns, it’s still worth telling.

Davy, an elderly local man was on his death bed. As his wife sat faithfully at the bedside reminiscing of all the years they had together, she took his hand and said, “Davy, ah always wondered why , when yer no a religious man, ye took the time to say grace every night before we took oor supper. Ah liked very much that ye always blessed the food ah cooked.

Davy, lying in the bed, looks up and calmly manages the few words, “Ah wis lettin’ the totties cool doon.”
