Though this photo of the North side of Glasgow Road is from 1981, this next story is from a little earlier in 1977.
With the redevelopment of Glasgow Road about to commence, in February 1977, arising issues with parking started to manifest. As older buildings were knocked down, indiscriminate, random parking started to happen. Behind buildings, in side streets, in between the tenements, residents took the opportunity to park wherever they so desired. Often to the annoyance of shopkeepers relying upon deliveries.
Strathclyde Regional Council decided to do something about it, but before enforcement came in a couple of years later, in 1977, the answer was to throw £21,000 of investment and build three small carparks. 1 in Craig Street, 1 in Clark Street and another proposed for Stonefield Road. Additionally, signs would go up on Glasgow Road introducing waiting restrictions.
Within the proposals for the redevelopment, railings were added in at various points along Glasgow Road, from Auchinraith Road, as far along as Bardykes Road, with the aim of directing pedestrians to safe crossing points.
Up until then, Glasgow Road had always had a bad pedestrian accident rate. A lot of accidents were caused by people stepping out into the road, from behind randomly parked cars.
It’s an interesting little snippet to show that safety was being considered within the redevelopment. In the 1981 photo, Forrest Street is just out the picture to the right, the scene now Devlin Grove.
