My great grandmother, Margaret Sneddon, was a Sneddon born in Slamannan, Stirlingshire May 6, 1873. Her father, Robert, was born in Slamannan, Aug. 20, 1849. He married Helen (Ellen) Dalrymple.
In 1861 census he is listed as age 10, coal miner, living at 4 Nappayfaueds South Row, In 1871 Census he is listed as a coal miner living at 6 Burn Row. 1881 census he is listed as sergeant of police living 67 Johnstone St., Airdrie New Monkland.
In 1891 he is listed as a "spirit Merchant" at 2 Cross Linlithgow. In USA census 1900 he is listed as a coal miner again.
His father was, William "Robert" Sneddon born June 28, 1824, Slamannan. Married Margaret Laird. In 1841 census he is listed as age 18 living at Haggs, Stirlingshire. In 1851 census he is listed as age 20 living at Newfielddyke as a coal miner with 10 month old son.
His father, also Robert Sneddon, was born in 1785 Bo'ness. He married Mary Hunter. In 1841 census he was age 50 lived at Corbie Hall as laborer Bo'ness1851 census he was age 65 living at Binniehill Colliery as a coal miner.
His father, John Sneddon born 7.25.1716 married Marion Logan. His father, Walter Sneddon was born 2.2.1692 Bo'ness. He married Catherine Lumsdale. Document listing Bo'ness deaths 1783 lists him as son of Richard coal hewer, But we have his father Walter Snadown born 2.1.1662 Bo'ness married to Susanna Broun. Then there is James Snowdoune born 1632 Bo'ness married Margaret Dobie. and finally, his father we have as James Snadan Snadoune born 1614 Died 1691 Alloa Clackmannan, West Lothian.
I have found several Sneddons who have been killed in mine accidents; at Bo'ness and at one of the pits at Blackbraes. Haven't tied them to our tree yet. Also find Mary Sneddon and Janet Sneddon who testified for the 1838-42 mine investigation. Haven't tied them to our tree yet either. Finally two Sneddons, father and son, died in the Benwood West Virginia mine disaster on April 28, 1924. They are definitely in our family tree. Can you help us understand if there was a relationship between the Bo'ness Sneddons and the Blantyre Sneddons? Any light you can shed on this would be most helpful. I'm doing a documentary series on the Sneddons and the McNeils and it's all about coal mining, the struggle from serfdom to artisan collier and finally, the decision to leave Scotland in 1892-93 for the coal mines in southeastern Ohio. The last segment of the documentary will be about the Benwood mine disaster.
