Orchard House, Crossford

Whilst we’ve been looking at the diary of Archibald Brown this week, you may have seen references walking “to Orchard”. This was Orchard at Crossford and Archibald, prior to coming to Blantyre lived in the little gardener’s house seen here on the left. It looked like a small tower, but has since been added to and extended into a modern home. Nearby is Orchard House, now a care home.

Archie left this scene in the mid 1870’s to come to Blantyre and settle down at Boathouse, carving out a full time career there as a market gardener, tending to his own orchards.
