Scotland’s Deadliest Pit Disaster, 1877

A lot of people have joined Blantyre Project this year, so here’s a quick synopsis of the most tragic event in 1877 which several people have enquired about. On 22 October 1877, an explosion tore through Blantyre Colliery, owned by William Dixon Ltd. In a matter of seconds, 215 men and boys—some as young as 11—were killed in Scotland’s worst-ever mining disaster.

The blast was caused by a build-up of gas. Most of the victims were from the Blantyre and Hamilton area, devastating local families and entire streets. The tragedy exposed shocking safety conditions in Victorian-era pits.

Memorials now stand to remember the lost, including at High Blantyre Cemetery, but the heartbreak of that day left a mark that still echoes through generations.
