Here’s a rare sight! The building of the Blantyre Sports Centre. Taken in 1981, year or so before it opened.
Homes in the background are John Street. The tenement to the right was one of the final buildings to be demolished on Glasgow Road redevelopment of the late 70s and early 80s.
The building of such a large sports centre must have been eagerly anticipated. Perhaps seeming futuristic, by comparison to the old tenements, by then so in disrepair.

Kiain Balloch I remember the pool at Blantyre Sports Centre being a big deal when I was a kid in the 80s. We’d come from Garrowhill to swim there even though Easterhouse, Coatbridge and Whitehill baths were all closer.
Stevie Gill During construction the pool had some kind of water in it half of logan street swam in it before the place was open
