1981 Main Street

1981 Main Street looking west

I’ve got LOADS of new photos to show you from the 60, 70s and 80s over the coming months, courtesy of George Hay.

Like this great photo, taken around 1980 or 81. It is of course Main Street looking west. The junction of Cemetery Road is on the right, the tenements in the foreground, no longer there. The rest of the scene is pretty familiar, but I wanted to show you this. Just how much the little tree planted in front of new houses has grown during the last 4 decades! With the grass opposite, the picture today is much more green.

Elizabeth Weaver A very familiar scene for us – Mum’s shop (Kiddiwear) was in the row on the right, at the near end – just out of sight. That used to be such a busy wee row of shops. Great old photo!
Karen Menzies I remember the butcher shop that was in the tenement on the right hand side ! sawdust ion the floor and the meat hanging from the ceiling x
Isabel Angela I’m sure here was a fruit shop there too ???? The smell of the apples
Joan Anderson Smith’s garage was down the next street on the right. Also had the old petrol pumps there too. My wedding car came from there and Audrey Smith did my flowers. Funeral cars for Dad and Mum too

  1. Hi Duncan. George Senior passed away a couple of years ago. George who shared these photos is his son.

  2. Hi Paul ,
Is this George a auld man about 82 who looks like 102? And went to Calder street school in the 50’s if I was in the same class. I thought for sure he would be on the Brown side of the grass
