New Buildings

Richard Black sent me a message saying, “I’ve discovered some old relatives who moved from Ayrshire to Blantyre in the early 1830s. In the 1841 census I have them living in Blantyre, with those aged 11 and above working in the mill. The address information on the census is a little vague, though, it just says “New Buildings”, and I’ve been unable to figure out where this would have been. The next address on the census page is “Front Row” which may give a clue, but again I’ve been unable to figure out where this would have been.”

I’m fairly sure the “New Buildings” relate to the expansion of Blantyre Works Village, especially given the decade. These were likely the new buildings along what would become Station Road, immediately next to Mid Row, Fore Row and Front Row. They were cleared in the early 20th Century. I’ve not got pictures of them, but from this model, it will give a good indication of what they looked like in the foreground.
