1925 Main Street, Kirkton (PV)

Kennedy’s Hall was a former hall located in Main Street, High Blantyre not far from where the Water Fountain is. It was located on the upper storey above a pub, by name of the Red Lion Pub and was owned by Mr. Kennedy in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The 2 storey stone tenement building was constructed in 1865 and had that date marked on the upper level, carved into the stonework.

The hall was located in a terraced arrangement and was on the south side of Main Street, across the road from the former Church Halls. On Tuesday 23^rd January 1900 a number of friends met in Mr Kennedy’s Hall to present their friend Mr Oliver a presentation on the occasion of his leaving Blantyre to go and work in Lesmahagow. Mr Oliver was presented with a handsome gold albert in the name of his many friends and admirers spoke very highly of him. They noted this was the best certificate of merit any man could receive. Mr. Alex McLean, croupier presented Mrs Oliver who was absent with a gold brooch. Mr Oliver replied on behalf of them both. The evening was spent in songs and recitations. Mr Lyon singing, Mr Rodger on the violin, appreciated by all.

Pictured in 1925 is the former hall and Red Lion Pub, although the pub and hall were vacant by 1930.
