1912 Curling pond at Milheugh
There used to be several curling ponds in Blantyre. One at Whistleberry, another near Milheugh, one at Stonefield Public Park, and another near Greenhall to name a few. This photo dates from the early 1910s and shows the Blantyre Curling team, posing for photos, at what i believe to be the curling pond near Greenhall.
The chap, second on the left with the white beard , I recognise from other photos as John Craig, of Bellsfield Farm.
The little building probably acted as a clubhouse and i believe the Cocksburn is directly behind it, permitting water to flood this field via a sluice gate. Up on the high ridge, is a level area which is the railway line. To the right, just outside the picture, I believe would be the start of the railway viaduct at green hall leading to the right all the way down to High Blantyre Station.
1910 Curling pond near Greenhall
This field is now seriously overgrown and on a recent walk, Jim Brown and I observed deer trails through the growth and the likely entry point of the sluice gate. It has also been suggested to me that this photo may be the Milheugh Curling pond, with the High ridge being Hunthill Road, but I don’t think the ridge is high enough and can’t find any trace of any small building at Milheugh in any era.
