The World Fountain

A rather lovely, (and rare!) photo postcard of the World Fountain at the David Livingstone Memorial Centre, back in the 1930s.

The fountain looks new in this picture, pristine tidy. The view, taken many decades ago shows well how much the area has changed. Long before the Africa Pavilions, these neat paths snaked around the grounds with plenty of benches offering views across to Shuttle Row. This view looks northwards towards the Clyde and Bothwell.

  1. When would this photo be taken? I note the absence of the cabinet into which one dropped a coin -probably ‘old penny’ -to cause fountain to play. Not evident in 1930s photo in your book about origins of DL Memorial but definitely present in late forties – I have on occasion ‘fed’ it myself!
