1940’s Milheugh Bridge

Nothing like a spot of fishing at the Calder! A photo capturing a simple past-time. Two men stand in their flat caps, at the former Milheugh Bridge (the one before the present bridge). They’ve cast their fishing rods into the Calder, patiently awaiting a bite and posing for the camera. Up above 2 onlookers at the top left.

By the early 1950s, this bridge was in such a bad state of repair it had become difficult to pass over it, subsidence from coal mining activity the likely cause of its eventual demolition. The new, current sandstone bridge is modelled on a similar style, with a much more rounded arch.
