Russo’s Grocers, 1981

Next we go to Millers Laun, the former tenements between Clark Street and John Street. Staying with our theme this week of going inside some of these old shops, we enter the door of 156 Glasgow Road on the north side.

This is Amerigo ‘Rigo’ Russo’s grocers shop, pictured on 21st September 1981, just before its closure and demolition. One of the last tenements to come down.

The shop looks sparse for a very good reason. These were the final days and stock was being sold off, ahead of closure. The old weighing scales where all the groceries would be weighted, something you don’t see in shops these days.

Who remembers going into ‘Rigo’ Russo’s shop then? More tomorrow.
