From 1976 or 77, this photo shows lots of Blantyre families walking down Station Road towards the David Livingstone Centre to enjoy the summer gala. Stuart Bell, who shared the photo told me, “My dad, who’s walking at the side was a Committee man for Blantyre Miners Welfare and we used to leave from there!”
Funnily enough, the modern Gala Committee had a similar idea a few days ago, marching a colourful parade down through the park towards the village. Blantyre needs its gala parades to come back!
