Here’s a lovely wintry photo. It is of course Milheugh Bridge
Photographed in March 1956, it was brand spanking new, replacing the old stone, arched bridge which had been so heavily damaged by subsidence. An argument had arisen in previous years between the County Council and the National Coal Board as to who should pay for the sandstone bridge over the Calder River.
Within the semi circular north ‘turret’ on the left there is inscribed graffiti saying “JH 1957” which can still be seen today.
Shared by Frances Burns, this beautiful scene shows that there had been some efforts to ensure the surrounding trees were protected or retained during its construction.
