Old Parish Church Lantern

This is one of the three large glass and copper lanterns that were suspended from the high ceiling in Blantyre Old Parish Church at High Blantyre.

They were suspended by chains and made for the opening in 1863. The chains allowed the lanterns to be lowered to be lit and extinguished.

Margaret Mary OSullivan I love seeing something like this. A piece of this church’s history. Just think of those long gone, who worshipped under this. I wonder what stories they could tell of their lives in this parish and in Blantyre. I find this photo and the thoughts it invokes very moving.
