The green space between Cypress Avenue and Bardykes Road was the subject of controversy in June 1968, when nearby residents displayed their anger at having to see their green space in front of their homes, ripped up.
The open space was turned into a construction site that summer as drainage from the nearby Calder Remand Home/School needed to be connected to the housing estate. The remand home was being built at the time. Contractors made a half hearted attempt at restoring the green space, but not to the satisfaction of residents.
The issue was taken up with the County Council and contractors were asked to restore the space to the original condition.
