Two Glasgow labourers appeared at Perth Sheriff Court on Thursday 7th September 1950. Michael Shannon (42), and James Marshall Lang (17), both of Whins Camp, Blantyreferme, Blantyre.

They admitted that on August 11the from a camp on Welton Farm, near Blairgowrie, with another man they stole a tent and its contents, including clothing, papers and foodstuffs. The Fiscal said that two men from Paisley had been working at the Blairgowrie berry-picking.

Returning from work late one night they found their tent had disappeared. The two accused were seen carrying suitcases believed to have been taken with the tent. The cases were found abandoned some distance away with some of the stolen goods in them. The remainder of the stolen property was discovered at Blantyre in the homes of the accused or in friends’ houses at the Whins Camp. Shannon, who admitted seven previous convictions, was sent to prison for sixty days. Lang was remanded in custody for a week for a probation officer’s report.

Pictured is the Whins Camp nearly a decade earlier, whilst it was still an Army camp. The camp was decommissioned in 1945 and became homes for new residents who moved from Dechmont in October 1948.
