This photo is of Glasgow Road taken in August 1970. Shared here kindly by Anthony Smith the scene looks westwards. Although a little blurry, you can still make out many shops, including Millar’s stores in the foreground. The street leading off to the left appears to be Elm Street.
This picture will be totally unrecognisable to Blantyre’s youth of today, with all buildings gone, all shops gone and the street re-profiled to be much wider.
We often talk on this page about the “price of progress” and the redevelopment of Glasgow Road, but little did these businesses realise what would be in store for them just 8 or 9 years later.
