Thursday 15th November 1928 was a sad day at Blantyre Ferme Colliery. An accumulation of gas in the virgin coal seam at Blantyre Ferme Colliery resulted in the death of one miner and injury to several others.

It appeared that the fireman, on going round, missed one man, and on a search being made, a heavy body of gas was discovered. One miner after another endeavoured to reach James Baxter, who had been working there, and each in turn was gassed. The gas masks were later brought to the scene which assisted slightly and ultimately Baxter was found. However James had died, overcome by the gas. He belonged to Lochore, Fife, was 54 years of age and left a grown-up family. He resided at Copeland Terrace, Uddingston.

There were several heroes on that day who were gassed whilst trying to save James. These men were affected by the gas but later made a recovery. William Russell of Cambuslang, Archibald Chisholm under manager of Woodlands Avenue, Bothwell, Archibald Shearer of Larkfield and Joseph McKenna of Uddingston.
