1877 Grieving families at the pit head, Blantyre

Blantyre Heritage Group Secretary, Gordon Cook is hosting a tour and talk of the site of the Blantyre disaster.

Gordon has very kindly agreed to do this and and the (above ground!) tour commences on Wednesday, 18th of November from 11.00am.

The tour will commence at Priestfield Car Park on High Blantyre Main Street and involve a bit of walking. It will take about 2 hours to complete so please make sure to wrap up! It is a great opportunity to listen to Gordon talk us through the details of the pit disaster , in a level of detail not previously seen. A great chance to actually visit the site where the disaster took place.

The tour will finish at the newly built Redburn Restaurant. Places will be limited. Anybody wishing to attend, is asked to reserve a place with :

  1. I would love to have joined Gordon on the walk. I recently established that two of my distant relatives, James Crichton and David Crichton died in the disaster along with their friends the Boyce brothers.

    By great grandfather Peter Crichton and Grandfather James Crichton later worked in the mines in Blantyre.
