Pictured here in the 1950’s are the pupil’s enjoying some Playtime at Auchentibber Primary School.  Pictured in the white jersey on the left is Stewart Chapman who would later have the honour of being the last pupil to leave Auchentibber Primary School on 30th June 1959.

Stewart and his family (Allan is pictured on the right also with a white jersey and black trousers) lived at Newhouse Farm. I’m reliably informed that the pupils only stayed at Auchentibber Primary School until they were 10, when moved on to the big schools. The last teacher was Miss Ferrier, whose brother was the headmaster at High Blantyre Primary School. The school helper/caretaker was Mrs. Wallace of Springpark who lived in the houses immediately to the left of the school.

Thank you to Allan Reardon and Stewart Chapman for providing this photo and information.

  • Alan Reardon The Allan Paul is referring to in the photograph is Allan Chapman who went by his middle name Andrew (Drew) who ran and owned a butchers shop in Burnside. Allan Chapman told me that the kids put on a show every year and this was them practising for it in the playground, and that’s why they all have head scarves on

  • Elizabeth Weaver Have to say they look a happy bunch! Bet it was more fun than Auchinraith in the 50s. I’d have loved to go to a wee school like Auchentibber.
  • Emma Trevethan If I remember right mr Ferrier wasn’t the Headmaster he was primary 7 teacher .. Mr Crawforrd was headmaster…
  • Margaret Nimmo Lehmann Yes Mr. Ferrier taught me in the early 60s, perhaps he was known as Head Teacher.
  • Jim Cochrane Mrs Wallace was the cleaner and cook and lived in the house where Alan Sergeson lives now .Flo Leggate was the caretaker who did indeed live in spring park.
