Causeystanes Thatched Building

1905 – 1908 Causeystanes

I’ve been looking at this photo taken around 1905 or so which is the upper half of the Broompark Quoiting Team photo, recently posted here. I wanted to try and determine which properties these were, especially as one of them at that time, was still thatched.

A 1910 map of Causeystanes reveals the location, and the buildings in this photo, I’ve marked with red dots. However, the 1910 map shows buildings to the right of the tenement in the background, which aren’t on this photo. Therefore, I was able to determine that the block of 3 further tenements shown on the map with yellow dots were built between 1905 – 1910.

It is unknown to me what the use of the small two buildings were in the foreground. One is derelict, the other closer to Broompark Road (which runs behind the white gable) is well maintained with tatch and looks in good condition.

All three of these buildings don’t exist anymore and the foreground buildings are now the car park of modern Ally Bally Bee Nursery, with the Main Street junction just out the picture to the left.
