2015 Cocksburn Culvert Greenhall. March. by A Rochead

Here are a series of photos kindly taken by Alex Rochead during a site visit to the Cocksburn Railway Culvert. This is located at the Calder, north of Greenhall. These particular photos capture the culvert from the Greenhall side, at its outlet. The Cocksburn flows down from the fields above Mid Letterick, down into the Calder River. The culvert was constructed as part of the embankment works to form the Greenhall Railway Viaduct and permits the Cocksburn to continually flow without obstruction.

There are partial collapses going on. Similar to the Lees Burn, the Cocksburn flows quite clear until it reaches the murky River Calder. Alex told me, “Building the railway from EK past Mid Lettrick and through Blantyre must have been a difficult and expensive business. When you look at the viaduct and then where you have to build a culvert and cover it with a large embankment it must have taken a great deal of time and money to complete the work. From Mid Lettrick to Blantyre covers a large area.“
