1905 Blantyre Mills, Low Blantyre

Whilst this postcard of Blantyre Works Mills dates from 1905, I think it depicts a slightly earlier scene. By 1905, the mills had fallen into decline , yet in this postcard, nicely colourised, the scene looks pristine and new, (and effect i think of the colourisation and touching up the photo).

The large mill buildings are imposing in the photo and the spire of Bothwell Church in the background clearly visible. In the foreground the path leads down from Waterloo and Cross Rows, down to the Pey Brig, which is factually shown in white. (we know the bridge was painted white to make it more pleasing, but only very infrequently. The painterswork drove away the bees that were nesting in the girders).

The modern bridge that replaced this one now sits further downstream, near where the farthest chimney is located.
