This photo dates from the 1880’s and pictured is the inside of one of Blantyre Works Mills.
You can see what a cramped, difficult place this must have been to work in. And dangerous too. There is no room for error, no room for slipping or tripping. it was commonplace for clothes, hair, fingers and limbs to get trapped in the machinery.
Although no people are pictured here, you can almost imagine the clatter of the machinery for up to 12 hours a day. I’m sure it would have led to hearing problems for many of the workers.
