1966 Council charge for Blantyre bath

The things you find in the back of cupboards! What a cheek! Council charged our family £37 in 1966 for a 5 foot bath. That’s about £500 in today’s money! Suppose they never had council tax then. Not sure which is more sad, the fact that I’m posting this as a little piece of Blantyre history, or the fact that I still have it at all.

Of course, our house was a council house then, as were all the houses in Stonefield Crescent. I’ll leave you with this, as Winston Churchill correctly observed when rallying against the impending introduction of council housing, “giving the working classes baths is pointless as they’ll only keep coal in them.”
