1936 Glasgow Road following tram removal

I think this postcard of Glasgow Road was created to show off the “new Glasgow Road” after the old tramlines had been ripped out. I cannot think why for any reason such a postcard would want to feature public toilets and looking from the quality of the road, I think it was to show off the newly constructed carriageway more than anything.

Pictured c1936 is Glasgow Road looking Eastwards. The public park entrance is on the left hand side (now where Cowan Wilson Arch is). The castellated public toilets building is now gone as indeed all public toilets have in this town. On the right tenements are situated along the Glasgow Road with Hasties Farm behind them. The first street leading off to the right is Victoria Street, and you can just see the Ness’s Primary School on the corner. Beyond that , on the right the next street leading off is Craig Street. there today) which led off to the left. You can see the large building on the far left horizon of the picture that used to sit at the end of Greenside Street, McAlpine’s buildings dominating the skyline towards the middle of the picture.

The old long armed tram standard poles still extend over the road, which remained for a few years following the trams. I recall that somebody informed me they came down in the war years, but can’t be sure who or where i heard that.

I have an old map of the area taken the same year. It puts much of this picture into context.
