During 1952, four well-known Scottish footballers gave evidence in Glasgow High Court of offers of easy money for selling games in which their teams were engaged. Joseph M’Cudden, master baker, of High Blantyre, Lanarkshire, was tried on three charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1906. He declared on 28th February 1952, in court in his evidence that he had met the players, but denied that he made any offers to them. M’Cudden accused of offering a total of £700 to three professional footballers, John Lynch through Alfons I.esz, Simon Waldie, and Willie Telfer for ” forbearing to exercise their skill in Scottish A Division” games last year. His evidence he strongly denied he had made any offers whatever to them. a telegram asking him meet hint to tell him of this decision. He denied that when he met made a certain proposal to him. asking him to pass on to Lynch, the St Mirren goalkeeper that he was prepared to pay £250 if Lynch played badly.
