Bus Crash at Stoneymeadow

chieftainOn Saturday 25th November 1950, on the main Stoneymeadow Road between Blantyre and East Kilbride, the Chieftain Double Decker bus smashed into a lorry. The bus was packed with local Blantyre people and 13 people were injured including workers in the lorry. Emergency services were fast to the scene and the injured were taken to Hairmyres hospital for treatment. The wintry conditions on the road were blamed and of course this was when the Stoneymeadow Road was the main road out of Blantyre, long before the Expressway.

25 year old John Oswald was detained with a broken collar bone but the others were allowed home that evening.
